Death Stranding 2: What are the types of orders?
The order system in Death Stranding 2 has received some minor changes compared to its predecessor. On this page of the guide we have described how the types of orders available in the game differ.
Last update:
Like the previous installment in the series, Death Stranding 2 features a ton of courier orders that require you to deliver goods from point A to point B. While the first game featured several dozen orders for Sam and several hundred standard orders, the second game changes this classification a bit, expanding it but also making it more intuitive. On this page of the guide we have described what types of orders there are in Death Stranding 2 and how they differ.
What are Main Orders?
Main Orders are the equivalent of the orders for Sam from the first game. There's not much to say about them - these are the main story quests, completing which pushes the story forward, allowing you to unlock new areas and connect key knots to the chiral network. During the main orders you will have to do deliveries of various types, elimination missions, and even boss fights. You will also gradually unlock new equipment that will help you with your next deliveries. There are 48 main orders in Death Stranding 2 that you must complete in order to see the credits.
What are Sub Orders?
Side Orders are, as the name suggests, orders that are not required to complete the main storyline. In the first Death Stranding, these were orders for Sam with a number on the list that was higher than 70, but here they got their own, more intuitive category. You will usually learn about the availability of a new sub order from NPCs, often after joining them to the chiral network - they will let you know in conversation that they have made an additional order available to you in their terminals. Occasionally, you will need to complete a sub order for them before they trust you enough to join the network.
Sub orders reward you with extra gear that you would miss by just completing the main quests. Usually this equipment is very useful right away and seems designed with the next main order in mind. As an example, one of the first sub orders rewards you with a tranquilizer sniper rifle, while the next main order requires you to clear out a bandit camp at the foot of a mountain. You should therefore definitely complete every side order you come across immediately.
What are Standard Orders?
Standard orders are the most common and least important types of orders. They do not advance the story and do not offer any rewards other than Likes, so their only purpose is to increase the rank of the knots associated with them (which may unlock additional rewards and gear). Earning an S Rank in Standard Orders is the only way to receive the Legend badges that appear above a player's profile name.
It's up to you whether you want to max out every available knot right away. Additional rewards for increasing your rank are useful, but not essential - they are usually slightly improved versions of gear you already have. If you don't want to delve into excessive grinding during the story, we recommend only accepting standard orders if the delivery goal is on your path. If you intend to continue playing after completing the storyline, you will mainly be dealing with standard orders.
