Mines are a new type of facility introduced in Death Stranding 2. As you might expect from their name, they offer material excavation services and are definitely one of the best sources for them. On this page of the guide we have described how mines work and whether it is worth using them.

How do mines work?

Mines operate on fairly simple principles. They act as stationary facilities, such as those to which you deliver cargo. However, they serve a different purpose - a functioning mine is able to mine large amounts of a specific raw material for you, which you can check on the map. This requires paying a certain amount of chiral crystals. The first mine, which you will unlock automatically during the main storyline in order no. 13, is used to mine special alloys. If you pay 2,000 chiral crystals, you will immediately receive 4,800 units of special alloy from the mine.

Mining prices are fixed and cannot be changed. So you can't, for example, pay 1,000 chiral crystals to get 2,400 special alloys.

The extracted materials will be prepared for delivery immediately in the form of multiple XL cargoes. You need to have a plan to get them to the destination. There are a few ways to do this:

  1. Monorail - this will allow you to transport huge amounts of materials at once, but first you need to rebuild the rails leading out of the mine,
  2. Truck - trucks can carry a lot of cargo at once, so this option is suitable if you want to use the materials to rebuild a road or railway tracks,
  3. Floating Carriers - by attaching two Floating Carriers, you can carry the extracted materials while walking,
  4. Magellan - the Magellan submarine is capable of teleporting between outposts, so you can stash supplies in a private locker on board.

Is it worth using a mine?

In the first part of the series, the best source of materials were enemy camps. While they can still be used to find a lot of materials in the sequel, the mines have dethroned them and became by far the best source of resources. It is worth establishing connections with them as soon as possible, as they will greatly facilitate the expansion of roads and railways, which are the most expensive undertakings in the entire game.

The biggest problem with mining is the potential shortage of chiral crystals - mining the materials is very expensive. Fortunately, large amounts of crystals grow around each mine. If you happen to be passing by any mine, it is worth stopping by and collecting the crystals. Even if you don't plan on mining anything, you can never have too many chiral crystals.
