In Death Stranding 2, you can develop the APAS tree which is a special upgrade system for Sam. This page will explain how to unlock this feature and what the different categories, such as Combat and Stealth, are. You will learn what is needed to activate abilities and how to respec.
How to unlock APAS?
You will unlock the APAS system shortly after completing the Mexico storyline and reaching Australia (main order no. 9). Once you have established contact with the first facility on the new continent, you will be instructed on how to use the new feature.
How do APAS upgrades work?
APAS upgrades take the form of a tree that you can access via terminals and the Ring Terminal. The condition, however, is an active connection to the chiral network. You cannot modify APAS upgrades outside of its area.
The APAS abilities are divided into 5 categories. You can develop each branch by performing activities related to it:
- Porter - deliver parcels;
- Combat - fight with opponents;
- Stealth - sneaking past enemies and eliminating them silently;
- Bridge Link - interacting with other players and some NPCs;
- Servicemanship - recovering abandoned shipments and fulfilling Aid Requests.
After completing an order, your statistics in the mentioned categories increase. Developing each branch will give you access to subsequent, more advanced APAS upgrades.
However, the upgrades aren't free. To activate it you must spend a certain amount of memory units. You can gain memory by connecting additional regions to the network. As the story progresses, the pool of available memory will continue to grow, allowing you to create increasingly complex builds.
Is there a respec?
It is worth noting that improvements are not permanent and can be replaced at will. This allows you to create specialized builds perfect for a specific expedition. You can perform a respec after interacting with the Ring Terminal and selecting the APAS Upgrades tab. Simply uncheck the abilities you already have selected. To make changes you must be within range of the chiral network (i.e. areas that are part of it).
