“I'm not into it.” Malcolm in the Middle revival without old Dewey, Bryan Cranston reveals why Erik Per Sullivan turned down the role
Malcolm in the Middle revival will be missing one of the stars of the original. Bryan Cranston explained why the Dewey actor had to be replaced.

Fans of Malcolm in the Middle were certainly pleased to hear that after years the beloved comedy series will return with 4 new episodes. While it won't be a typical long-running series, it will provide a glimpse into the lives of the well-known characters after such a long hiatus – fans will finally be able to find out how the lives of Malcolm and his family turned out.
Unfortunately, the bad news about Malcolm in the Middle revival is that not all the actors will return. Once again the cast will include Frankie Muniz, Jane Kaczmarek, Bryan Cranston, Christopher Masterson, Justin Berfield, who will play Malcolm, Lois, Hal, Francis and Reese.
But Erik Per Sullivan, who will be replaced by Caleb Ellsworth-Clark in the role of Dewey, will not return. Why has this change occurred? Bryan Cranston explained that the original Dewey actor refused to return because he is going to Harvard and is not interested in acting (via Entertainment Weekly).
I talked to Erik and I said, “Hey, we got the show! It's going to come back.” He goes, “Oh, that's fantastic!” And I go, “Yeah, so we're looking forward to having you back.” He goes, “Oh, no, no, I don't want to do it. But it's fantastic.”
He's actually going to Harvard. He's really, really smart, and he's getting his master's at Harvard right now. He said, “Oh God, no, I haven't acted since I was 9 or something. So I'm not into it.”
Erik Per Sullivan ended his acting career in 2010 with the film Twelve. After that he withdrew from the limelight and focused on a completely different life, which he apparently intends to continue without returning in front of the cameras.
