Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Tactical Takedown is a tactical game set in the universe of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. The game was developed by Strange Scaffold - an independent development studio, with games such as El Paso, Elsewhere, and I Am Your Beast in their portfolio.

Gameplay

In Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Tactical Takedown, we watch the events in an isometric view. The game has been divided into campaigns, each dedicated to one of the titular Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

Turn-based beat'em up with TMNT figurines

During the game, we primarily engage in battles with opponents. The fights take place in turn-based mode, on arenas covered with a grid of square fields. Over the course of subsequent rounds, the levels change their layout, expand and contract, and also reveal new challenges to us.

TMNT: Tactical Takedown review: The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles game you didn't know you needed

I never could have seen this coming, but it makes sense that such a talented indie studio would make an awesome Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles game. Fun and challenging battles combine perfectly with a unique tabletop-like art style and an excellent soundtrack, making this game feel like a new side street off memory lane.

Strange Scaffold studio head Xalavier Nelson Jr. believes that, paradoxically, games developed over two years are „more exciting” than those that have taken much longer to make.

TMNT: Tactical Takedown is full of great ideas that, while only half-realized at times, make for an undeniably fun tactics experience for gamers of all levels. As the first tactics game for both the Turtles and Strange Scaffold, there is certainly room for growth, but between the incredible soundtrack, the effective and high-momentum blend of tactics and beat-em-up gameplay, and how easy it is to play and enjoy, Tactical Takedown is a Turtles game worth checking out for its clever genre leap.

TheGamer: 4 / 5 by Eric Switzer

But when your biggest complaint about a game is that it left you wanting more, you know it’s something special. Like this year’s Expedition 33, Tactical Takedown overcomes the most common complaints about turn-based games to deliver a strategically action-packed experience. This is an excellent showcase of what makes the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles so beloved, and as a fan, I’m so happy to see the turtles finally get the kinds of games they deserve.

MonsterVine: 4.5 / 5 by Branford Hubbard

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Tactical Takedown is the second TMNT game I’ve played and reviewed in recent years, with great humor, music, and gameplay. I did find some occasional lag, which I think is because the game is unclear in communicating if an animation is “over” or not. It is also a shorter budget title, which seems to work very well for the property. If you’re even a casual TMNT fan, I think you’ll find something to love here, with a great story that hints at more to come in the future.

The main pros of the game

  • Unique Gameplay Mechanics: The game introduces a fresh take on the TMNT franchise by combining turn-based tactics with dynamic level design, where the environment changes as you play, creating opportunities for strategic plays.
  • Distinct Character Abilities: Each turtle has a customizable kit that makes them feel unique, encouraging players to experiment with different strategies and loadouts.
  • Art and Sound Design: The game features a charming, tabletop aesthetic and a soundtrack that, while different from traditional TMNT music, has been well-received for its creativity and fit with the game’s vibe.
  • Replayability: Players can revisit levels to achieve higher scores and experiment with different character builds, adding to the game's longevity.
  • Engaging Story: While not groundbreaking, the narrative resonates with TMNT fans and is executed well, with a heartfelt twist that impacts gameplay.

The main cons of the game

  • Short Length: Many players found the campaign to be quite brief, typically ranging from 4 to 10 hours to complete, which some felt was not justified by the $20 price tag.
  • Limited Team Dynamics: The gameplay restricts players to controlling only one turtle at a time, which disappointed those expecting cooperative tactics that leverage the turtles’ teamwork.
  • Lack of Difficulty Options: Some users noted that the game could be too easy, with a desire for a more challenging experience or a lower difficulty option for casual players.
  • Graphical Issues on Some Platforms: A few players reported technical problems, particularly on the Steam Deck, affecting gameplay experience.

The features or elements that are missing from the game according to users

  • Team Play Mechanics: Players expressed a desire for the ability to control all four turtles simultaneously, which would enhance the tactical aspect and make use of their teamwork.
  • More Content: Users wished for additional levels, enemies, and gameplay modes (like endless or challenge modes) to extend the game's replay value and keep players engaged after completing the main campaign.
  • Expanded Character Customization: While there is some customization, players felt that more options for abilities and moves could enhance the strategic depth of the game.
  • Variety in Enemy Types: Several reviews indicated that the enemy variety was lacking, which limited gameplay dynamics and challenge.

Summary

  • Overall, "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Tactical Takedown" is praised for its innovative approach and engaging mechanics, but it faces criticism for its short length and limited cooperative gameplay. Users express hope for future updates or sequels that could address these shortcomings.
