“I didn’t want to be in a whole bunch of B action movies.” After Kill Bill, Uma Thurman had to quit action movies, but after 21 years she found a reason to return
After Kill Bill, Uma Thurman stopped appearing in action films until now – on the occasion of her return after a 21-year hiatus, she explained why she avoided movie in this genre.

After her great performances in the Kill Bill films, Uma Thurman disappeared from action movies. While one might have expected the actress to continue her good run with films in this genre after such successful showings, she walked away from them for more than 20 years. And now she has decided to explain her decision.
Uma Thurman returned to action movies after 21 years this year with The Old Guard 2. She had previously avoided the genre because she didn't want to get pigeonholed in it and get stuck in B cinema, which is famous for action movies. The actress preferred to seek challenges and prove herself in other productions without being locked into just one category, as she told The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.
I never really followed Kill Bill up with action because I didn’t kind of want to be in a whole bunch of B action movies. When you do Kill Bill, you never stop hearing about, you know, it’s like, “Oh, got to be very careful about what I do next.” So I did other stuff.
Why did she change her mind after avoiding action films for so long? She was encouraged by Charlize Theron's performance in The Old Guard. Watching her, she was impressed by what Theron did in the 2020 film and wanted to support her by appearing alongside her, so she agreed to face her in the sequel.
Charlize was just so epic in [The Old Guard]. And so I thought, “Well, I could go do this for her in that. Where she’s kind of taking the genre there. I’ll go support her and fight her and battle her out…” I thought she was so fantastic in that. And I thought it was such a unique kind of action movie. It had such character and depth, and it was really quite moving.
We will be able to see Uma Thurman and Charlize Theron in action on July 2 on Netflix. The Old Guard 2 will be the Kill Bill star's return to action movies after a 21-year hiatus.
