A week ago, Original War celebrated 24th anniversary of it’s release. Fans of this classic RTS game can still count on regularly delivered fresh content thanks to the continuously developed major mod Sand of Siberia. We’re mentioning this project because it’s undergone significant changes recently.

This month, the mod received four major updates—1.6.8, 1.6.9, 1.6.10, and 1.6.11, the last of which was released just a few hours ago. These brought many changes:

  1. A total of eight new maps for PvP matches were added.
  2. A new, significantly improved AI was introduced for skirmish mode.
  3. Gameplay balance was refined.
  4. The multiplayer interface was improved, including an option to create custom avatars.
  5. Numerous bug fixes were also included.

The goal of Sand of Siberia is to thoroughly improve and expand Original War. The project modernizes the graphics (including support for high widescreen resolutions), improves AI, and fixes a lot bugs bugs. It also greatly expands the game’s content—besides additional PvP maps, it offers an extra campaign, as well as new weapons, animations, and sound effects.

Initially, the mod included two new campaigns—one for the Ares faction and one for Russia. However, the latter was removed due to numerous technical issues. It’s improved version is planned to appear in version 1.7 of the mod
