In early June, the Polish studio People Can Fly announced that they were putting two big projects – Gemini and Bifrost – on hold and also mentioned that they would be reducing their workforce. We didn't know exactly what those titles were at the time, but now ThumbWars has reported that one of them is supposed to be Outriders 2.
Outriders 2 canceled
The source of this information is an anonymous insider, who admitted that the development team found out about the game's cancellation at the same time as the rest of the world. So it was quite a surprise. It's confirmed that the project known as Gemini was supposed to be released under the name Outriders 2, which was somewhat expected since the same company, Square Enix, was going to be the publisher, just like for the first installment.
It is all the more regrettable that, according to the source, the game was allegedly "almost finished." However, People Can Fly was forced to cancel it due to circumstances that were "beyond the studio's control." Unfortunately, it's not clear what exactly that means.
The first Outriders received a mixed reception from players. The game, released in 2021, received over 45,000 reviews on Steam, of which 66% were positive. What's interesting, some players were saddened by the potential cancellation of the second installment of the series, despite it not being a remarkable game. They have fond memories of the original.
First one was fun to mindlessly grind with friends. Would have been cool to get a second one.
That's disappointing. Outriders was a fun game. Not great, but enough was there to think a sequel could be great.
I liked the first part, but it was rather average. The cancellation of the sequel is not a big surprise. Despite this, I would play it if they released it.
What about the Bifrost project?
ThumbWars also gave some information about the second canceled project, codenamed Bifrost. It was supposed to be a game-service not based on any known franchise. Unfortunately, according to the source, the title didn't arouse any major enthusiasm even among PCF employees.
It was allegedly described as a "generic, trend-following product, devoid of originality and creativity." If that was really the case, then perhaps it was a good thing that the project was canceled before it saw the light of day.
